Lacunae

To say I loved you was an undermining,
where words, separate from their moorings,
belong far away from doing

so these words are, so the next will be
so I will stand at the foot of you and not say a thing
without words without doings and with the days sputtering in between.

Last week, I watched a child with a stutter tell a story.
But the real story was in her shining eyes, her shifting feet,
the way she pushed out her plosives like a bird,
and me nodding, not understanding a word.

Here I am, piled up with stories for you.
    You, separate from doing,
belong to the spaces in between.
